If you are having difficulty typing Unicode characters using Alt+numpad shortcuts on Windows (such as Alt+0151 for the long em-dash "—"), note that some laptop keyboards, at least, have different functionality for left and right Alt keys. Please try using the other Alt key, or see your laptop's keyboard settings.
